Today in these tough economic times with high unemployment I have had occasion to talk to several gun owners who have been saved by having a gun in their possession. I would like to pass on to you a couple of stories of my customers and what I am experiencing in talking to people coming in to take CCW classes. In the last year I have seen increased numbers of young men and women in addition to senior citizens like myself taking courses and buying guns to protect themselves and their families.
Another very nice quite couple in their seventies frequently visit with me and they were telling me the story about a night they went to the movies together. They are an adorable couple and probably weigh a little over two hundred pounds combined and soaking wet. He always carries a silver colt pistol on his waist under his shirt. They went to a movie together on a beautiful warm evening and they had to park at the very far end of the parking lot. When they came out of the theater it was dark and most of the cars had left. Their car was in a dark spot all alone as they walked towards the car talking to each other, they noticed something moving by their car. Suddenly a very large man came charging at them from the direction of their car. The elder gentlemen pulled his shirt up an over the gun and grabbed it to pull it out. The large charging male saw the gun because it reflected the little light there was from the distant parking lot light on its shiny surface and he turned and ran away. They called the police but the man was never found. Maybe they just would have been robbed but whatever his intent was it was aborted by the site of a weapon that equaled out the playing field for size and age.
This brings me to my last story one of my bike companies good customers. He is in his sixties and has a diabetic pump. He rides his recumbent bike in the park every night in Indiana to keep his sugar under control and stay fit. One evening he was riding and a small group of gang members approached him and blocked his way. They told that they liked his bike and that they would be taking it away from him. He was not sure of exactly what they had in mind for him after they took his bike so he pulled his Glock pistol on them. He told them it would be over their dead bodies and they decided to leave him be and quickly departed the area. He called the police on his cell phone but they were no where to be found by the time the police arrived. The police remarked he should have shot them as it would have been doing the community a service as they would be back to just find another victim.
I was the chief of a small police department in Illinois for several years and I have come to the conclusion that criminals will get guns or other weapons if they want and it is only fair to allow civilians to carry guns to protect themselves. The truth is that while police departments try hard to protect you it is usually to late by the time they get there. The police want to protect you but you better be able to protect yourself and your loved ones because in most instances everything is over in seconds if not minutes in these cases. Men and Women alike face many dangers at ATM machines, in parking lots, coming and going from shopping and work not to mention in their car.
There are more guns than people in the U.S. so if you think a criminal does not have a gun or another weapon in his possession you better think again. I am not trying to scare you but if you read NRA magazine, you will read story after story, of people whose life's were saved by having a gun. Think of all the abductions and murders that may not have taken place had that person been able to protect their selves. I would want my wife and my adult children to carry a gun on their person for self defense. In a ideal world maybe guns would not be necessary. But in the real world, we would be speaking German or Japanese if it was not for the gun. A gun can save your life as it is a tool it can be used for bad or good. It is both useful as a tool for self defense and hunting. I am not sure what the future will bring but if there is some type of great catastrophe I would want a couple of guns in my home so I could hunt for food and protect my loved ones.
In closing I recommend everyone should learn both gun safety and how to shoot a gun as it may save your life or someone you love one day.
